Women of Brussels (arthritis joint pain)
Oana Uiorean posted a photo:
Meet Portocala. She is a Romanian gypsy, 18 years of age. Her daughter is called Alina. They both beg on Rue de Namur, the street lined with some of the poshest shops in Brussels. Today, a rich lady passed her by and, appalled by the view, called the police to come and remove her. They sent the other two ladies you see in the photo, which, true to their mission, asked her to leave. Portocala doesn’t know what to do now. She is afraid to return home, the girl’s father is likely to hit her if she doesn’t bring enough money. He left them after the girl was born, never sending money or asking how they are, but married her recently to bring her over. For the extra income. She would like to send the girl to school, she knows how important it is so that the girl will have a better life, but the husband won’t let her. The child makes people give more money, he believes. She would be ready to return to Romania tomorrow, her father will take her in, even if she doesn’t have a husband. But first she would like to take her daughter to the doctor, she has some mild neurological problems that a specialist here might be able to solve. She has no insurance though. If anyone knows of associations in Belgium which deal with one or several of the many issues this woman has to face, please let me know. They are just people, after all.
